Punjab Government Announces Relief Measures for Minority Bikers
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced an exemption for Sikh motorcyclists from the mandatory helmet law and approved an increase in minority cards from 75,000 to 100,000.
Speaking at a Christmas ceremony, the chief minister explained that Sikh riders were exempted due to the religious obligation of wearing turbans, which makes the use of helmets impractical.
She reaffirmed the Punjab government’s commitment to safeguarding minority communities, stating that their security and well-being are key indicators of the government’s performance.
Maryam Nawaz emphasized that any attempt to harm minorities or deny them their rights would be dealt with strictly. She added that creating a minority-friendly Punjab should be a collective responsibility, with the majority community bearing a greater role in ensuring harmony.
While addressing the Christian community, the chief minister extended Christmas greetings and announced the expansion of the minority card program to provide support to more families.
She also highlighted that Christmas was celebrated across the province through city decorations, festive messages, and large installations, including a Christmas tree and a Santa Claus display at Liberty Chowk.
